HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HVAC SYSTEM FOR WINTER

Winters in Alberta are long and cold. Thankfully, your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system can keep you comfortable and warm. However, if you want to ensure optimal performance of this essential appliance all season, it’s important to take precautions. Here’s what you should do to prepare your HVAC system for winter.

Winterize your air conditioner

Start by shutting down your air conditioner for the season. Wash and dry your unit, then protect it from ice and snow by wrapping it with a waterproof cover. Check to see if there’s a casing designed for your specific unit.

Change your air filter

Dirty filters can make your HVAC system less efficient. Replacing your filters regularly keeps dust out of your furnace so it can continue to run smoothly. Most filters should be replaced every three months, or every time the season changes. However, you may need to replace them more frequently if you smoke or have pets. Check your owner’s manual for more information on how frequently the filters for your specific unit should be replaced.

Clean your air vents

Your air vents and ducts need to be cleaned periodically to remove dust and debris that can clog the system. Cleaning your vents will also improve the air quality in your home. In addition, make sure to open and clean your vents before you turn the heat on. Blocked vents can raise your energy bill and may cause your furnace to overheat and eventually breakdown.

Test your furnace

Make sure to run your furnace a few times before it gets cold outside. Let the system run for a while and pay attention to any strange sounds or smells. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, contact a qualified HVAC technician to have it checked out.

Conduct regular maintenance

Fall is an ideal time to conduct maintenance on your heating system. Routine upkeep is the most efficient way to ensure your HVAC system continues to run smoothly. A qualified technician can catch minor issues before they become major problems. Regular maintenance can also extend the life of your furnace and consequently save you money in the long run.
