UNDERSTANDING FAN COIL SYSTEMS

Diagram of functioning fan coil system

A fan coil unit (FCU) is a device that contains a heat exchange coil and a fan. FCUs are often used as standalone devices for heating or cooling a space, but they can also be used as part of an existing HVAC system. They provide individual, room-level temperature control and are available in horizontal, vertical, ceiling and wall-mounted units. Here’s what you should know about these devices.

The importance of fan placement

There are two main types of FCUs: blow through and draw through. The difference lies in the placement of the fan. In the former case, the fan is fitted behind the coil and in the latter, the fan is fitted in front of the coil. Draw through units are more efficient since they pull the air through the device. However, they’re also more expensive.

The role of hot and cold water

Air temperature is adjusted when it passes over a coil that’s supplied with either hot or cold water from a central chiller or boiler. A two-pipe FCU system contains only one coil that serves as either a heating or cooling coil depending on the system. A four-pipe FCU has both heating and cooling coils and includes a distribution system that contains return lines for both hot and cold water supply.

The heating/cooling process from start to finish

First, air is sucked into the unit from the return grill. It then passes through a filter to remove dust and dirt particles. Then, the clean air then moves over the coil and is either heated or cooled through heat transfer. In the summer, as the air cools, water vapour condenses from the air, reducing its humidity. The FCU contains a drip tray with a drain connection to capture and remove the condensation. Lastly, the fan blows the temperature-adjusted air into the space.

The advantages of fan coil units

FCUs have many benefits. They’re:

  • Simple and affordable to install

  • Energy efficient

  • Simple to clean

  • Durable and easy to maintain

  • Available in many different designs

  • There are multiple reasons to choose FCUs over other devices. If you’re unsure which heating and cooling system is right for your home or business, the experts at Harmony Heating & Air Conditioning can help.
