HOW TO DISPOSE OF YOUR HVAC UNIT

men holding a clock

Heating and air conditioning units contain chemicals (such as Freon) that are harmful to people, animals and the environment. When released into the atmosphere, Freon and other refrigerants can destroy the ozone layer and contribute to climate change. This is why it’s illegal to throw your old air conditioning unit in the trash. So, how do you get rid of it? Here are some ways you can safely dispose of your old HVAC unit

You can sell it

If your HVAC is still functional, it can be reused. You can either sell it or give it to someone in need. Consider donating it to a thrift store or charity. If it’s not in good working order, you may be able to repair it. A qualified HVAC technician can fix leaks in the piping, repair broken condenser fans, clean the internal systems and top up the refrigerant coolant.

You can recycle it

Many recycling centres take in old HVAC units. This is because the metals and plastics inside can be stripped and reused. Some recycling centres may charge you to remove the refrigerant, but other will pay you for the scrap value of the unit. In addition, some energy companies offer incentives for recycling your old appliances with them. You may be able to receive a rebate or discount on a new, energy-efficient HVAC unit.

You can dump it

Some municipalities require that you prepare your HVAC or air conditioning unit by having the refrigerant removed before discarding the appliance. According to Environment Canada regulations, only a certified technician can handle and remove refrigerants. You can pay an HVAC technician to prepare your air conditioner before bringing it to a landfill or hazardous waste facility. Alternatively, you can pay a junk removal specialist to pick it up for you.

You can replace it

Many HVAC companies will remove your existing unit when they install a newer model. These companies will either recycle or dispose of the old appliance safely. Certified HVAC companies can drain the refrigerant from the unit before getting rid of it at an approved reclamation centre.
