Heat Pump Troubleshooting: Common Cooling Problems and Solutions

During the hottest months of the year, many people rely on their cooling systems to keep temperatures low in their homes. Unfortunately, it is exactly when we need our heating pumps the most that they usually show signs of malfunctioning. But what are the most common problems related to heat pumps and what are effective solutions for these issues? Let’s look into it.

troubleshooting heat pumps

Faulty Reversing Valve

In many cases, when a heat pump is not cooling, the reversing vale may be broken. This a very important part of your cooling system and it is responsible for moving hot and cold air inside them system. If you are having performance issues with your heating pump, you might need to have a professional repair or replace its reversing valve.

Low Refrigerant

Cooling systems generally use refrigerant gas to blow cool air into your property. When there’s a refrigerant leak, your heat pump will turn on, but it won’t be able to cool your home. In these cases, it is recommended to not only recharge the refrigerant of your cooling system but also detect where the leak is coming from so that it can be fixed. Since these issues requires technical knowledge, it is recommended that you have these procedures done by a reliable professional

Dirty Filters

Depending on the usage of your cooling systems, their filters might get dirty sooner than you think. Dirty filters can act as a barrier against the air that comes out of your system and prevent them from working at their peak performance. This means that in many cases your heat pump and cooling system are running as expected, but the cool air is being trapped inside it. In order to avoid low performance and high energy consumption, make sure to clean your cooling systems’ filters once every two months.

Blocked Outdoor Unit

In many cases, the outdoor unit of heat pumps are installed near the ground outside the property. This can contribute to a scenario where the outdoor unit is blocked by either debris that get trapped inside the pump or foliage that prevent the passage of air. When that happens, your heat pump is not able to blow hot air out of the property which significantly reduces its cooling capabilities. Make sure to constantly check the conditions of your heat pump’s outdoor unit, especially if you have lots of trees around your property and clean it from time to time.
